They started with the shield badges in ‘53 to go with the car lines, which had a badge starting in ‘50. The model year ‘60 Falcons had a shield as well, on the trunk:
...before they realized that Falcons were not actually prestigious and they weren’t fooling anybody.
The ‘60-’61 fullsize Fords still had a related badge:
...which by ‘63 had moved to other places on the car and gotten styled away beyond reason:
By ‘67, they’d stuck the shield into the middle of the weird circular/oval shape they’d been playing with in 63:
